Performance, lifetime, safety of Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) are characteristics which are constantly in need of improvement. The operating temperature of LIBs has a major impact on these, hence the need for very precise temperature control during battery characterisation and model parametrisation.

The industry standard for thermal control in battery testing is to use environmental chambers based on air convection. The Isothermal Control Platform (ICP) presented here allows unprecedented, accurate temperature control at the battery surface over a large temperature range through contact cooling.

The presentation will cover:
• The importance of accurate temperature control during battery testing
• Overview of the THT Isothermal Control Platform (ICP)
• How the battery surface contact temperature is controlled
• Data at high C-rates using different types of cell (pouches, cylindrical, prismatic)
• Comparison with commonly used environmental chambers

Speaker:
Etienne Brouillet, Applications Scientist, Thermal Hazard Technology
Etienne studied chemistry at the University of Strathclyde (MChem), where he carried on with a PhD, participating to the development of post-lithium ion batteries. After further experience in the field as a postdoctoral researcher at both the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow, Etienne joined Thermal Hazard Technology (THT) in 2019.
